Vectren ready to comply with CSAPR

October 19, 2011

While many coal-dependent utilities are publicly warning of the challenges involved in complying with the Environmental Protection Agency’s new Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, Vectren Corp. recently announced that its coal-fired power plants were “well-positioned” for compliance.

Vectren Corporation's headquarters in Evansville, Ind.The investor-owned utility cited $410 million in emission controls that had been installed over the past decade. “We made the investment ahead of other utilities. Others chose to delay and buy allowances,” said Vectren spokeswoman Chase Kelley, adding that the utility doesn’t anticipate any further capital expenditures related to the new rule. However, Vectren does expect additional costs related to proposed coal ash rules.

Vectren’s coal fleet is smaller than that of many Midwestern utilities, totaling roughly 1,000 megawatts at three plants operated by its SIGECO subsidiary.
