The Power Report

Rate increase materials available

November 17, 2011

Co-ops face many challenging tasks, but one of the most unpleasant for many is having to announce rate increases to members. Wabash Valley hopes to soften the blow with materials that help co-ops explain the industry changes that triggered the 2012 increase, explained Communications Manager Sabrina Kapp.

“We’ve developed a press release and a newsletter article that co-ops can customize for their own publications, websites, and publicity efforts,” Sabrina said. “The press release and article explain the three primary factors behind the increase: the increasing cost of compliance with environmental regulations, investments in the reliability of our generating assets, and hikes in fuel costs because of global demand.”

In addition to the two print pieces, Sabrina is outing the finishing touches on some Power Point slides.  "We know that the rate increase is likely to be a topic discussed at co-op annual meetings this year, so the slides can be included in the CEO or Chairman's report," she added.

The materials also explain the relationship between co-ops and Wabash Valley, and emphasize that the increases are the result of industry changes, rather than local decisions. “While it’s never easy to tell members that we have to increase their bills, we hope this approach will help to educate them about the realities of today’s energy market and encourage them to make more efficient energy choices.”

The article and press release have been distributed to all member systems, and the slides will be included in a general WVPA update, available in January.  For more information, contact Sabrina
