Climate negotiators agree to more negotiations
December 19, 2011
The recent UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa ended with a pledge for more negotiations and a goal to enact a new worldwide treaty by 2020. The new effort to limit greenhouse gas emissions is more palatable to U.S. officials, because it is expected to subject China, India, and other developing countries to the same standards as the rest of the world.
The negotiators also extended the previously approved Kyoto Protocol, an agreement which the U.S. refused to ratify. The next conference will be held in Qatar in late 2012.
